A systematic review examining the effects of Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture treatment on obesity has found them to be more effective than placebo or lifestyle modification in reducing body weight. The authors analysed the pooled results from 96 RCTs: 49 trials of CHM, 44 trials of acupuncture and three trials of combined therapy. The results of the meta-analysis also showed that CHM and acupuncture had a similar efficacy to Western anti-obesity drugs, but with fewer adverse effects.
