Cupping Therapy

cupping therapyThe ancient art of cupping therapy dates back 3500 years and it is an integral part of Lorna’s traditional Chinese practise alongside acupuncture and moxibustion.

What is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy uses cups to apply pressure to stimulate acupuncture points, meridians or areas of the body encouraging increased circulation of blood and fluids. This stimulation is extremely effective in removing the blockages caused by stress-related tension which can produce uncomfortable symptoms.

It is also very good for dispersing localised muscle tension or fluid accumulation that can cause pain in joints and muscles.

Cupping therapy works by reducing the pain we feel in our bodies. Lorna uses the more traditional method of fire cupping. This involves introducing a flame inside the glass cups to burn the available oxygen and create the vacuum inside the cups, allowing them to stick to the body by suction, producing pressure.

Ancient Chinese medicine believes that the body contains “Meridians”. These meridians are pathways in every body part, tissue, and organ through which the energy of life called Qi (“chi”) flows. Cupping therapy is mainly performed on one’s back because there are five meridians on your back. When these meridians are opened, the internal energy is able to flow through the whole body.

It looked most bizarre when applied to my stomach and watching the vacuum effect on my skin. But there was no pain, only the pleasant warmth seeping into my skin

The pressure from the suction of the cups can penetrate deep into your tissues causing them to release harmful toxins. It triggers the lymphatic system, clears the blood vessels, and stretches and activates the skin making cupping an effective form of detoxifying and cleansing.

The use of cupping therapy has many benefits and can be applied in many treatments.

Moxibustion

moxibustion at essex acupuncture

Warming points through Moxibustion is an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It utilises a substance called Moxa, which is made from the aged leaves of a herb called mugwort. Like the sun, moxa produces a comforting dry heat helping to eliminate dampness and cold in the body, alleviating Aches and Pains and supporting Aging Joints.

Pain Relief

If you are one of those people who has exhausted the chemical pills and potions of Western Medicine, then Acupuncture could be for you.
There are many patients who have been sent home to grin and bear it and, after many months of putting up with discomfort, the discovery of natural pain relief in the form of an acupuncture treatment can be the most wonderful experience.

Battlefield

Originally developed to treat pain in US Air Force pilots who were unable to take medication while flying, this ear acupuncture technique has proved so effective in the relief of pain that many soldiers across the american forces have been trained so they can treat each other on the battlefield.
