The ancient art of cupping therapy dates back 3500 years and it is an integral part of Lorna’s traditional Chinese practise alongside acupuncture and moxibustion.
What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping therapy uses cups to apply pressure to stimulate acupuncture points, meridians or areas of the body encouraging increased circulation of blood and fluids. This stimulation is extremely effective in removing the blockages caused by stress-related tension which can produce uncomfortable symptoms.
It is also very good for dispersing localised muscle tension or fluid accumulation that can cause pain in joints and muscles.
Cupping therapy works by reducing the pain we feel in our bodies. Lorna uses the more traditional method of fire cupping. This involves introducing a flame inside the glass cups to burn the available oxygen and create the vacuum inside the cups, allowing them to stick to the body by suction, producing pressure.

Ancient Chinese medicine believes that the body contains “Meridians”. These meridians are pathways in every body part, tissue, and organ through which the energy of life called Qi (“chi”) flows. Cupping therapy is mainly performed on one’s back because there are five meridians on your back. When these meridians are opened, the internal energy is able to flow through the whole body.
The pressure from the suction of the cups can penetrate deep into your tissues causing them to release harmful toxins. It triggers the lymphatic system, clears the blood vessels, and stretches and activates the skin making cupping an effective form of detoxifying and cleansing.
The use of cupping therapy has many benefits and can be applied in many treatments.
