Korean hand acupuncture (KHA) has been shown to be effective in relieving symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Korean researchers randomised a total of 42 women with IBS to either KHA (on hand acupoints related to bowel symptoms) or sham KHA twice a week for four weeks. The KHA group demonstrated a significant decrease in IBS symptoms including loose stool, bloating, abdominal discomfort and abdominal pain, compared with the sham KHA group. No significant differences were found between the groups regarding stress, mental health or heart rate variability.
