The evidence for the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is encouraging, conclude Korean authors. Four RCTs and two uncontrolled clinical trials (UCTs) were systematically reviewed. One high-quality RCT reported that acupuncture was superior to waitlist control and that the therapeutic effects of acupuncture and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) were similar, based on effect sizes. One RCT showed no statistical difference between acupuncture and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). One RCT reported a favorable effect of acupuncture plus CBT against CBT alone. A meta-analysis of acupuncture plus moxibustion versus SSRIs favoured acupuncture plus moxibustion in three outcomes. Further trials are required to confirm these suggested benefits of acupuncture.
