Electro-acupuncture (EA) has an effect equal to noradrenaline in reducing hypotension during anesthesia in patients undergoing liver transplantation, according to an Iranian research team. Forty patients with end-stage liver disease who were donor transplantation were randomised into two groups. One group received the vasoconstrictor noradrenaline, while the other group received EA at Neiguan P-6 and Jianshi P-5, to treat hypotension during anesthesia. During all three stages of the transplant operation, there were found to be no significant differences in haemodynamic measurements (including mean arterial pressure, heart rate and central venous pressure) between the two groups. (Electro-acupuncture (EA) stimulation at acupoints reduced the severity of hypotension during anesthesia in patients undergoing liver transplantation. J Acupunct Meridian Stud. 2012 Feb;5(1):11-4).
