A Turkish pilot study suggests that acupuncture may be an effective method of analgesia in newborn infants. Ten pre-term neonates requiring a heel prick for blood gas analysis were randomly assigned to receive acupuncture or no acupuncture before the procedure, and the groups were crossed over on the following day. Crying duration and neonatal infant pain scale scores during heel prick were found to be lower in those neonates who had received acupuncture before the procedure.
