Leigh-on-Sea – often known as Leigh, although not to be confused by the Lancashire version – is a small town by the River Thames in Essex.
The census of 2001 showed its population as 20,737 but the internet fails us with the news of this figure from 2011. This British coastal town was once ranked as the second-best place to live in England and is famous as the home towns of both Helen Mirren, the actress and John Fowles, the author of The French Lieutenant’s Woman.
Originally a port, due to its proximity to London, fishing is still a big part of resident’s lifestyle but the major shipping destination is now a quiet little olde worlde fishing village which has become the focus for a whole raft of artists and their studios. There is an annual Folk Festival, Regatta and Art Trail.
Acupuncture for Headache Pain Relief
The National Health reports that about 1% of the population of the UK suffers from chronic headaches. That means that there are a couple of hundred people living in Leigh-on-Sea could benefit from acupuncture therapy that focuses on pain relief.
The British Journal of Medicine published an article in 2009 which found that acupuncture is “at least as effective as, or possibly more effective than” medication commonly prescribed for migraines and chronic headaches. Typically, acupuncture therapy increases blood flow to areas where circulation is poor by dilating any small blood vessels and capillaries around the site of the needle. For chronic headaches the acupuncturist often concentrates on areas besides the neck and head, like the legs and arms – and often in the ears – to alleviate the pain of headaches?
Acupuncture as a Fertility Treatment
In a town the size of Leigh, as many as 2,000 women and men could have problems with getting or staying pregnant. Acupuncture treatments for fertility are becoming more common, as Western medical treatments are very expensive and out of the reach of many people with fertility issues.
For the 1,000 or so couples in Leigh who are dealing with fertility problems, acupuncture can help heal common causes of trouble with pregnancy. Acupuncture is used to stimulate certain areas of the body to increase circulation.
Though some forms of fertility issues, like tubal adhesion or endometriosis, cannot be helped by acupuncture, many other causes of infertility improved. In many cases, stress or a previous emotional trauma can be to blame and acupuncture helps to relax the recipient sufficiently to allow the body’s natural processes to take over.
The idyllic sea side vistas belie the strains and stresses of the commuter lifestyle faced by many of Leigh’s residents and acupuncture therapy can be extremely beneficial for a variety of ailments and long term chronic pain.
