A retrospective cohort study from a Taiwanese research group suggests that acupuncture treatment results in reduced use of medical services by patients who experience traumatic brain injury (TBI). Of 66,026 new-onset TBI patients, 3495 had received at least 12 acupuncture treatments. Compared with TBI patients who received no acupuncture, those who received acupuncture treatment had fewer visits to, and lower expenditure for, emergency care and hospitalisation in the first year post TBI. Acupuncture treatment was associated with a 38% reduction in risk for medical visits in the post-injury year.
