A multi-centre RCT carried out in China has found that adding acupuncture to conventional treatment does not result in any additional benefit for patients with subacute stroke. One hundred eighty-eight patients with subacute stroke were randomised into an acupuncture group and a conventional rehabilitation group. A combination of body and scalp acupuncture was used for three months in the acupuncture group. All patients underwent conventional stroke rehabilitation. Significant improvements were found in both groups following treatment, however, no statistically significant differences were found between the groups at one, three, or six months.
