Korean authors have found ‘encouraging’ evidence suggesting that acupuncture is more effective than medication in relieving acute low back pain (LBP). A total of 11 randomised-controlled trials (1139 participants) were included in their meta-analysis, which showed that acupuncture more effectively improved symptoms (e.g. function/disability) of acute LBP compared with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. However, in terms of pain relief, the evidence for acupuncture was inconsistent. Verum acupuncture, which was associated with few side effects, was also found to be more effective than sham acupuncture for pain relief, but not function/disability.
