An animal experiment has shown that acupuncture at Zusanli ST-36 can block the production of neuropeptide Y (NPY), a molecule produced by the sympathetic nervous system in response to chronic stress. Electro-acupuncture was applied to Zusanli ST-36 in laboratory rats exposed to stressful cold. A control group and a sham acupuncture group showed no change in NPY, however, the group receiving acupuncture showed a significant long-term decrease in NPY production.NPY is linked to stress-induced physiological responses that are damaging to health in humans. By reducing the production of this neurochemical, acupuncture may be able to help prevent the harmful long-term effects of chronic stress.
