Chinese researchers have found that acupuncture can significantly improve pain and activity levels in patients with chronic Achilles tendinopathy, compared with exercise therapy. In a randomised controlled trial, 64 patients received either acupuncture treatment or exercise therapy. Acupuncture was seen to outperform exercise therapy in terms of improvement in Achilles tendinopathy scores by 25.8 points (on a one-hundred point scale) after 16 weeks and 28.4 points after 24 weeks, compared with improvements of only 10.0 and 16.6 points respectively in the control group.
